The seasonal pattern

Late spring through early autumn gives the warmest, calmest water in the Maltese islands, and mid-summer is warm enough for long swims in a rash guard — but it is also hot, crowded and expensive, and the famous sites fill by mid-morning. Wind is the planner rather than temperature: the islands are small and low, so a spell of wind decides which coast is workable on the day, and Dwejra in particular is open to swell and cancels when the sea is up. Winter water wants a wetsuit, so the shoulders of the season are often the best compromise — warm enough, calm enough, and far quieter.
