Best time to snorkel in Great Barrier Reef

The seasonal pattern for Great Barrier Reef — what each stretch of the year tends to bring, and what to plan around. Guidance, not a forecast.

Seasonal pattern, not a forecast — conditions vary; verify tides, weather and visibility locally before you go.

The seasonal pattern

Australia's winter, roughly June to September, brings calm, clear conditions and the lowest rainfall — the most relaxed and predictable snorkeling window. Summer, roughly December to February, is warmer and more humid with lighter winds but a higher chance of rain, plus stinger season along inshore areas from around November to May. On the outer reef the box-jelly risk is lower and most operators issue stinger suits in season as standard. Water temperature swings with season and latitude, so pack for a range rather than one number.
