📍 Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
A shallow bay that in season concentrates plankton — and the manta rays that feed on them. When a feeding event happens, it's one of the most remarkable snorkeling spectacles on Earth.
Seasonal (June–Nov roughly) and never guaranteed; the site is managed with strict boating rules — go with a permitted local operator.
📍 At the reef crest outside most island resorts
Most resort islands sit on an atoll rim, so a house reef — the drop-off and reef flat just offshore — is snorkeled straight from the beach. Dawn and dusk are best for turtles and reef sharks cruising the drop.

In the capital's backstreets, hole-in-the-wall cafés serve hedhikaa — the deep-fried tuna-and-coconut snacks called bajiya and gulha — with a cup of sweet black tea. You share a formica table with clerks and divers alike.
Tip: Order a plate of assorted short eats, not just one type — each is different.
Local (non-resort) islands with guesthouses
On the local islands where guesthouses have opened, breakfast is mas huni — smoked tuna hand-shredded with coconut, chilli and lime, scooped up with roshi flatbread. A genuinely local start before a manta trip.
Tip: Ask for it 'the locals' way' with extra lime and onion, and take more roshi than you think you need.
Near the Malé fish-market area
Tiny eateries near Malé's working fish market ladle garudhiya — a clear tuna broth — with rice and a squeeze of lime as the morning's catch is sold off behind you. Simple, honest, and exactly what locals crave after the trade.
Tip: Add the chilli-and-onion side to lift the broth before you eat.
