Protected lagoons walled by ancient limestone karst, with dense gardens of healthy coral in calm, mirror-clear water. The classic Raja Ampat postcard, snorkelable from many of the region's eco-lodges and liveaboards.
Access is mostly by boat from a lodge or liveaboard — verify the operator's route.
📍 Northern Raja Ampat, Wayag/Piaynemo group
The iconic mushroom-shaped islets rise over shallow turquoise channels. Snorkeling the protected inner channels puts you among small fish and coral gardens with the full karst skyline overhead.
📍 Near Kri / Mansuar islands
A rare snorkeling mangrove: clear water lets you drift the root systems in search of baby fish, small rays and the quiet nursery life that beginner snorkeling rarely reaches.

Kri Island, Dampier Strait
After a day drifting the house reef, the host family lays out grilled reef fish, cassava and a fiery papaya sambal over a shared table under the palms — the same catch the village netted that morning. It's the simplest and most memorable meal of the whole trip.
Tip: Ask if the family makes papeda, the Papuan sago porridge, so you can eat it with yellow turmeric fish soup (ikan kuah kuning).
Waisai, Waigeo
Waisai's covered market has a row of warungs ladling out ikan kuah kuning and sago staples at sunrise, before the ferries run. You eat next to locals doing the weekly shop, not another tourist.
Tip: Go early — the fish broth sells out by mid-morning.
Arborek, central Raja Ampat
In tiny Arborek, the day's snapper is grilled over coconut coals at dusk while kids play in the shallows and the karst skyline turns pink. A bowl of rice and sambal completes a dinner nothing on the mainland can touch.
Tip: The village has a traditional guest show on some evenings — check whether today is one before you plan around it.
