Australia is the only country on this shortlist that holds two coasts' worth of reef: the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, our rank-02 icon with its professionally run day-trip gates, and Ningaloo on the west coast — a World Heritage-listed fringing reef on the opposite side of the continent. We keep them on one page deliberately, because the country name is the only thing they share. Neither is a swim-off-the-beach afterthought, but the GBR is a boat day by design, while Ningaloo's coral begins metres from the sand.
