Saudi Arabia appears in our catalog as its Red Sea coast and nothing else: the interior, the Gulf coast and the pilgrimage cities are not snorkeling destinations in this guide. What we cover is the northern Red Sea — Umluj’s island group, the enormous Al Wajh Bank offshore, Yanbu’s fringing reef and the NEOM project’s Sindalah island — plus a note on the Farasan Islands in the far south-west, which is a separate journey rather than a stop on the same trip. The country opened to leisure tourism only in 2019, and that is the honest frame for the whole page: genuinely lightly visited reef, with genuinely thin infrastructure. Licensed operators are few, what is open changes quickly, and much of the best water is a boat day or a liveaboard rather than a swim from a beach. Read this page as a frontier-coast report rather than a booking brochure.

Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast is the newest and least developed snorkeling region in this catalog, and both halves of that sentence are the point. The country opened to leisure tourism in 2019 with an e-visa, and the reef along the northern coast — Umluj, Al Wajh, the huge Al Wajh Bank offshore, Yanbu, and the NEOM project's Sindalah island — has seen a small fraction of the diving pressure that Egypt's coast, a few hundred kilometres north-west, handles every season. What that means in practice is genuine frontier reef alongside genuine frontier logistics: licensed snorkel and dive operators are few, what exists changes quickly, and a lot of the best water is a boat day or a liveaboard away rather than a walk off a beach.
