Portugal appears in our catalog as the Azores, and that is deliberate: the archipelago is the destination, roughly a third of the way across the Atlantic on the Gulf Stream, and nothing about it resembles the Portuguese mainland coast. This is a temperate, volcanic archipelago of nine islands with clean, deep-blue ocean around them — collapsed craters, lava coasts and boulder fields instead of coral, plus open-ocean seamounts where mobula rays gather in summer. The water is cool by tropical standards, so exposure protection is the norm rather than a preference. We treat it as its own country page because its water, distances and logistics have nothing in common with the Algarve.
